The announcer's voice came over the arena as the Dusty Bay stallion was led into the ring. Unlike so many of the other Ballators today, who had pranced and bolted and rolled their eyes in nervousness, Rex padded calmly into the arena. This was his first real show, and he was determined to make a good impression. Although, he was somewhat annoyed at the tight, itchy braids they had forced his mane into. He chomped the bit in anticipation as the handler led him to the starting point. Then the buzzer sounded, and the handler loosed him and he bounded forward, popping over the first small jump easily. As he came up to the second, higher jump, he collected neatly, pushing off and clearing. And finally, the third, highest jump. He soared over effortlessly, and the crowd clapped politely. As if they were bored with neat, unimpressive rounds! No matter. There were two more runs to do, and he was still being timed. He circled the arena at a near gallop, coming back to the beginning again. He went through the course again, faster this time.
And finally it was time for the last run. He barreled around the corner, dirt flying up in all directions. Determination glinted in his eyes-- he jumped the small jump, then the medium. Time for the grand finale. He exploded over the large jump, easily clearing it by two and a half feet, lifting his tail high from the shower of grit that followed him. The crowd gasped and exploded into applause as he landed and cantered back to his handlers-- A time of 23 seconds, the best time of the day awaited his victory. As he was led out, he gave a cocky smirk to the next horse in line. "Beat that."
