We all know the feeling! When you see an atrist, and you can't help but die over their art, because wholy shizznuggets its everything you've ever wanted. Ask Lockdown333 , I do this ALL THE TIME. ALL THE TIME. And then I get depressed because my style isn't like theirs.
When I was younger I used to trace and copy other people's styles to get mine to look like theirs. I used to stare at their art and try to draw my own angles. But after a while, I got stuck, because I could only draw 2 poses.

So, onto the main point:
Recently I've been seeing a lot of styles I recognize around.

I'm sure we all know CrystalUniicorn's mane style. Gorgeous, whispy 'HOWDOYOUDOTHAT' beautiful manes. Her long, luscious eyelashes and dainty mares are her signature!
Fillyfalls' beautiful faces. manes and eyelashes too. They are similar to Crystal's but yet entirely different!
Wild-Hearts, with her beautiful comic and simple, yet complex way of drawing. HER MUZZLES THOUGH
Gwanoli has one of the best wolf/canine styles I've ever seen. Period. Its just. wowh.
Fargonon's muzzles, muzzles, muzzles!

NOW.
I'm not saying it's wrong to look at other styles for ideas. I do that a lot! As artists, we need to look to each other for help.
But when an artist sees something and has to double take and go, "wait, did I draw that?" i think that's when referencing becomes more than referencing and morphs into copying.
We all know the age-old argument: 'YOU CAN'T COPYRIGHT A STYLE'
Nope. You can't. But still, it's a form of intillectual property. YEARS of time, effort and crying probably went into that tyle. Years of hard work and dedication. And it is extremely hurtful when we see our hard-worked for style being copied by someone.

So, bottom line:

Using artists as inspirations is TOTALLY COOL.
Taking Inspiration (a few whispy manes here, a few muzzles there) is COOL if you allow yourself to branch out from that.
Using artists as bases for your art is NOT COOL.
Using tutorials made by the artist to help you grow is COOL because that is what they are for! WHat they are not for is teaching you how to draw exactly like the artist.
Blatantly copying styles is TOTALLY NOT COOL.

If you're sitting there and going 'oh no she's talking about me'... then there is a fair chance that I am!

Love you all <3
